Thesis preparation tips

Binding :

Please leave a margin of approximately
35-40mm on the binding side of the book.

400 pages of 80 gsm or 4 cm in thickness make for the ideal thickness in a hard covered book.  This is a guide, but books that measure a lot over 4 cm are often better presented as 2 volumes.

To avoid disappointment, be aware that final editing takes time.  Set yourself a realistic time for the final steps of Printing and Binding.

Always check the page sequence of  your book - especially if you have printed it yourself.  Plan a shortened version of your thesis title, in case your title has too many words for the width of your book.

Check with your supervisor how your university likes to abbreviate the name of your degree.

Printing:

PDF format is essential.

Black and white or colour?  Watch out for hidden colour pages in your document.  Our printer automatically 'records' the number of black & white and coloured pages, so be aware of 'hidden' colour on some pages eg websites, scanned pictures or tables, email addresses.

The Margin on the binding side needs to be 3.5 - 4.0 cms and if your document is double sided you need to adjust your margins to mirrored and check the position of your page numbers.
